In 1896, when Walter Riggs took the helm as the head coach of Clemson football, he brought a special nickname for the team. Inspired by the Princeton Tigers, he aimed to give Clemson the same moniker. Interestingly, although he played at Auburn before coaching Clemson, Auburn's nickname (also the Tigers) wasn't directly linked to Princeton.
