Former Kansas football coach John Outland, an All-American tackle and halfback from the University of Pennsylvania, was passionate about bringing a track and field event like the Penn Relays to Kansas. With the support of Athletic Director Phog Allen and Jayhawks track coach Karl Schlademan, the Kansas Relays were born in 1923. This annual three-day meet in April consistently attracts top high school and collegiate competitors, and has even welcomed Olympians like Maurice Green and Marion Jones to Lawrence.
