In 1867, the West Virginia Legislature established the Agricultural College of West Virginia under the Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act. It was renamed West Virginia University the next year, and the local newspaper described it as a haven for scientific and literary pursuits. The student newspaper was founded in 1887, the first football team took the field in 1891, and the basketball team was formed in 1903. Today, 22,000 undergraduate students study on the three sub-campuses in Morgantown.
